Our work-design vision and transformation process was laid out in the new book– How Work Works Now: Designing Organizations for the AI Era—by WRK founder Drew Jones. The book shows leaders how their organizations can cross the work chasm from proximity and personality based organizing and ways of working to a digital-first, anywhere/anytime systems architecture that is more resilient and adaptive.

The book does not advocate 100% remote work. Rather, it asks leaders to be open to learning from the documentation and culture building practices of remote companies as a first step in building truly digital-first, AI enabled organizations. With a commitment to trust and anytime/anywhere working, the book then outlines a vision for building choice-based workplaces designed to attract employees without mandates, schedules, or other arbitrary policies.

Crossing the Work Chasm Workshop

The workshop helps leaders rethink:

  • How well employees (and managers) understand company strategy and goals.

  • How effective decision making is.

  • How effectively do managers coach and mentor (vs. monitoring and micromanaging).

  • How much time is lost in (unproductive) meetings.

  • How workplace strategy shapes culture.

  • How much productivity is lost due to legacy assumptions and routines.

  • How much knowledge and expertise is lost when key personnel leave.

  • How is AI being used to enhance organizational learning.

  • How much talent is out of reach because of synchronous working and in-person work requirements.

Crossing the Work Chasm can be delivered in person or online, though in-person sessions are preferable. Each participant receives a copy of the book, as well as a list of other readings to prepare for the difficult conversations that lie at the heart of the workshop experience.
